Welcome to GreenItUp, a database of common items, and how to reduce, reuse, and recycle them.

Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle Cardboard Boxes

Includes shipping boxes, moving boxes, shoe boxes, appliance boxes.

Reduce

Buy things locally instead of online. Buying online comes with the pollution associated with shipping the package, plus the actual packaging. You ever received a few medium-sized boxes from Office Max, each with one small ink cartridge and the rest packaging material? Yeah… exactly.

Get used instead of new moving boxes. Hit up Craigslist or U-Haul’s box exchange forum.

Reuse

Build a fort.

Make furniture.

Ship stuff in them.

If you have a lot of moving boxes, hit up Craigslist, as there are often people (especially at the end of the month when apartment leases expire) who will be glad to take them off your hands. Buying new moving boxes costs a buttload.

U-Haul has a forum for locals to sell/give each other moving boxes. Give/sell yours so someone else doesn’t have to buy new ones.

If you have large quantities of same-size boxes (for businesses, most likely), usedcardboardboxes.com will buy them from you.

Recycle

Remove any tape, shiny portions, and staples, rip the cardboard to shreds, soak them, then use that as bedding for your worm bin.

Cardboard can be composted.
